Understanding Davis' Sanctuary City status: A Community Conversation with Davis Police on Building Safety in Our Immigrant Communities

The Davis Police Department, the city’s Human Relations Commission and The Davis Phoenix Coalition will be hosting a community conversation on Thursday, October 16th, 6:30pm, in the multi-purpose room at Marguerite Montgomery Elementary (1441 Danbury Street in Davis). The meeting will focus on the City of Davis’ status as a “Sanctuary City”. The format will include the opportunity for community members to be heard and to gain understanding of police policies.

Some of the possible challenges and topics to be addressed on the 16th include:
• Fear of law enforcement: Criminals may exploit this fear and target immigrants due to their perceived reluctance to report crime.

• Confusing federal immigration enforcement and local law enforcement, innocent undocumented immigrants may fear deportation by local law enforcement if they report crimes committed against them.

• Cultural differences: Cultural misunderstandings can lead to negative interactions between immigrant communities and law enforcement.

To increase positive relations between the police and the many diverse Davis community groups, the Davis Human Relations Commission along with The Davis Phoenix Coalition have begun a series of formal “Chats with the Chief” as well as informal conversations aimed at removing barriers to safety and promoting a deeper experience of inclusion within these communities with the understanding that a united community is safer and more harmonious. Formal meetings will rotate throughout locations in the city and be held on a quarterly basis. Informal coffees will also be held at Davis Community Church.
