October 2014 Predictive Policing - 14A73 Preventable Crime Trends

October 2014 - Predictive Policing

14A73 Preventable Crime Trends: #PlayaDelRey#Westchester (west of Sepulveda)

BASIC CAR 14A73: Senior Lead Officer Ruben Garcia

PREVENTABLE CRIME TRENDS: Day time burglaries all watches. Burglary from Motor Vehicles and Grand Theft Autos between 11:00pm and 6:00am. Vandalism by "Poserz" gang members. Recent tagging in areas within basic car 14A73. All hours. Burglary, BFMV, and Thefts or what are commonly seen in basic car 14A73.

MODUS OPERANDI: Suspects look for unlocked vehicles, open windows, unlocked gates etc. Lock windows and doors. Get alarm system. Lock vehicle and do not leave valuables visible inside vehicles. Pay attention to your surrounding and alert police when you see suspicious activity. Unlocked doors and windows are common points of entry for burglars.

ALERT METHODS UTILIZED: Westchester/Playa del Rey Neighborhood Watch Facebook page – F a c e b o o k .com/WPDRNeighborhoodWatch

@Westchester311 on Twitter

Block Captains in Westchester/Playa del Rey utilize YahooGroups to communicate crime and safety information.

N e x t d o o r .com is and increasingly popular source of information re crime and safety.

SAFETY TIPS: Items of immense personal value and irreplaceable, are often not used and really should be kept in a secure safe (ie, one that is bolted to the ground or studs of your home) or in a safe deposit box at the bank). Doors and windows must be locked or secured to prevent someone from just opening it up and getting in.

Don't make it easy to enter. Alarms are increasingly common and effective. They need to be audible so the neighbors can hear it, and it must be monitored. It's not a good idea to rely on your neighbors to call the police if your alarm is ringing or your dog is barking. Having an armed response by a company like SSS (please see other post for info) is increasingly important because we know that it takes too long for LAPD to respond.(Here is another opportunity to complain that it shouldn't be that way, which is true, but it is also the way it is).

Security cameras may serve as a deterrent as well as provide evidence after the fact. In order for cameras to be effective, the owner must know how to retrieve video.

The quality and cost of surveillance equipment is getting much better and can provide valuable evidence to solve a crime. Neighborhood Watch is of utmost important. Thru NW, neighbors get to know each other a bit and begin to care about what happens on their street and surrounding area and are more likely to pay attention and get involved than if they live among strangers.

NW is a good way for neighbors to be more aware of crime concerns and be more observant of suspicious activity.
