GTPD Community Bulletin: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic violence is best understood as a pattern of abusive behaviors–including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks as well as economic coercion–used by one intimate partner against another (adult or adolescent) to gain, maintain, or regain power and control in the relationship. Batterers use of a range of tactics to frighten, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, often injure, and sometimes kill a current or former intimate partner.
Domestic violence thrives when we are silent. But if we take a stand and work together, we can end domestic violence. We can end it by telling our friends and family that we will not tolerate domestic violence and by asking them to take a stand with us. We can end it by supporting the programs and shelters that provide refuge and safety for hundreds of thousands of survivors every year. We can end it by ensuring that our communities hold abusers accountable for their actions. Throughout this month, help us raise awareness about domestic violence and join us in our efforts to end violence. Together, we can make a difference.
The Gloucester Township Police Department takes all Domestic Violence incidents seriously and offers a Domestic Violence Response Team that is made of a group of dedicated Volunteers. These volunteers provide victims of Domestic Violence in Gloucester Township comfort and support along with available resources. The volunteers are given a free 40hr training at a local library and are asked to dedicate 4 hrs a month to this worthy case. If interested in becoming a member please contact DVRT Coordinator Nancy Hutchinson 856-227-1234. Class is forming now.
