Narrative:
In July and August of 2014, the Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit (PCU) responded to an increase in cocaine use and sales in the east county area by conducting several investigations that resulted in multiple arrests for drug violations. The cocaine was being used and sold by teenagers and young adults. Through these investigations, detectives determined that the majority of the cocaine in these cases was originating from Marco Cuevas, a Sylmar resident.
Detectives conducted an investigation into Cuevas where they witnessed him selling cocaine to a Ventura County resident. The investigation also revealed that Cuevas was involved in the sale of guns.
On 9-26-14, members of the PCU, along with other specialized units from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Cuevas in Moorpark where he was suspected of going to engage in a cocaine deal. Cuevas had several ounces of cocaine on his person, as well as a half-pound of cocaine in his vehicle. The cocaine in the vehicle was in the back seat area with his five year old son. The son was tested, and preliminarily proved positive, for cocaine in his system. Cuevas’ wife, Sandy, was also in the vehicle and was in possession of over $10,000 in suspected drug proceeds.
A search warrant was served at the Cuevas’ residence in the 13300 block of Berg Street, in Sylmar. Evidence of drugs sales, several pounds of marijuana, hundreds of pills of prescription drugs, $75,000 in cash, 16 guns, and nearly 3000 rounds of ammunition were located at the residence.
Marco Cuevas was booked into Ventura County Jail for possession for sale of cocaine, conspiracy to sell cocaine, child endangerment, and multiple weapons violations including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He is in custody in lieu of $1,000,000 bail.
Sandy Cuevas was booked into Ventura County Jail for possession for sale of cocaine, conspiracy to sell cocaine, and child endangerment. She secured bail and her court date is pending.
The Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit is a full time task force comprised of members of law enforcement from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Simi Valley Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, and the California Highway Patrol. The task force’s main mission is combatting the transfer of legal prescription medication to the illegal market. A secondary, and equally important mission, is identifying and stopping emerging drug trends among our county’s youth.
