Resident warned of on goiong scams

Today an Officer responded to Stop & Shop for a call from customer service. A resident of Swampscott received a phone call from a Spanish male party telling her he was holding her brother hostage at gun point after getting into a car accident with him out of the area. The male told the resident she needed to pay a ransom for her brother’s release or the male was going to execute him. They first demanded $3000 but said they would take $1000. The resident was instructed to Western Union the money and to stay on the phone the whole time the transaction was being completed. Officers were able to explain the scam to the resident and locate a family member that could verify that her brother was ok. The resident didn’t go through with transaction after police involvement.
Keep in mind the other types of scams out there. Recently, individuals have said they are from the IRS and the caller would be arrested for back taxes by the local police. If residents question any types of these calls, hang up and call Swampscott PD 781-595-1111.
