Significant arrest in Simi Valley

On September 5, 2014, at about 8:30 P.M., members of the Simi Valley Police Department’s Special Operation’s Unit observed a vehicle driven by Herbert Alvarenga in the 6500 block of Los Angeles Ave. in the City of Simi Valley. Alvarenga had an outstanding Felony warrant for 664/187 P.C. (Attempted Murder). A traffic stop was initiated on the vehicle at Alscot Ave. & Anastasia Ave. and Alvarenga exited the vehicle and fled eastbound on foot into the residential neighborhood. A perimeter was immediately set up, utilizing members of the Simi Valley Police Department, with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, and helicopter(s) from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Air Unit. A systematic search of the neighborhood was conducted using two K-9 search teams. The suspect was subsequently located in the attached garage of a residence in the 2000 blk. of Cheam Ave. Alvarenga had entered the garage via an unlocked exterior pedestrian door. He was taken into custody without incident and booked at the Ventura County Main Jail for the outstanding warrant.

Although this incident resulted in the suspect being arrested without having entered the residence attached to the unlocked garage, this arrest should be a reminder to Simi Valley resident’s to keep their homes locked and secured. This dangerous criminal could have easily entered the home and endangered the safety of the occupants in lieu of simply hiding in their garage. Simi Valley is known as a “safe city,” but no city is crime free.
