BRIEF NARRATIVE AS TO CIRCUMSTANCES:

The Novato Response Team has been investigating a string of vandalism cases that began as early as December of 2013. Many of these vandalism cases involved spray paint graffiti to both public and private property over the last year where the suspect(s) used a personal moniker or “tag” to mark their territory. The investigation concluded this week when both Joseph Tucker and Johnny Schad were contacted at their residence and arrested. The damage caused by both Tucker and Schad to city property alone is estimated at $6,700. Tucker and Schad were booked into Marin County Jail on felony vandalism charges.

The police department will request that if Tucker and Schad are found guilty, that they pay restitution to the property owners and participate in community service, specifically graffiti abatement.

Launched in 2012, the Novato Response Team (NRT) is a proactive, problem-oriented community policing team, with the flexibility to engage long-term, short-term, and emerging challenges. The team is focused on a wide set of issues, including school safety, assaults, and graffiti, as well as gang and drug activity. The NRT consists of four staff—three police officers and a management analyst. The team collaborates with a wide range of community organizations, from non-profits to businesses.
