Hesperia collision results in death of a 32 year old man and two passengers receive minor injuries.

DATE/TIME: September 1, 2014 / 3:59 p.m.

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision

LOCATION: Bear Valley Rd. /2nd Avenue, Hesperia

INVOLVED PARTIES: 32 year old male, Name withheld pending notification of family

SUMMARY:

On September 1, 2014 at about 3:59 p.m., Deputies from the Hesperia Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a reported two vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Bear Valley Rd. and 2nd Ave. in Hesperia. Upon arrival deputies determined that two eastbound vehicles had collided and the solo occupant driver of one of the vehicles had major injuries. It was determined that an eastbound 1996 Honda Civic had rear ended a 2008 Saturn View SUV, which was also traveling east on Bear Valley through the intersection of 2nd Ave. The collision caused major damage to both vehicles that came to rest in the center of the roadway, blocking traffic.

The 32 year old male driver of the Honda was transported to Desert Valley Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased from his injuries. Two female occupants from the Saturn were also transported with minor injuries and later released.

Hesperia Station's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) Investigators responded and were able to determine through evidence and numerous witnesses that the driver of the Honda Civic was driving east on Bear Valley Rd. in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed. As both the Honda and Saturn went through the intersection at 2nd, the Honda rear ended the Saturn, causing both vehicles to continue east down Bear Valley until they came to rest.

MAIT Investigators are continuing the investigation into the collision and the name of the victim is pending notification of family. Bear Valley Road was closed in both directions from Hesperia Rd. to Third Ave. until about 9:00 p.m. while MAIT investigators processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor in the collision but based on evidence at the scene and witnesses, speed of the Honda appears to have been a contributing factor. Witnesses reported seeing the Honda at speeds in excess of 80mph prior to the collision.

Anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Deputy Kevin McCurdy from the Hesperia Station.
