Safety Precautions Involving School Buses for Riders and Drivers

As you send your child back to school, please refresh a few safety precautions involving school buses.

• When you are waiting for a bus, stand at least 6 feet, or 3 giant steps away from the curb.
• If crossing the street in front of a bus be sure the bus driver can see you.
• Never walk behind a bus.
• While riding the bus, remember that loud talking or other noise can distract the driver is extremely dangerous.
• Keep the aisles clear of books and backpacks in case of emergency.
• When pulling up to your stop, wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up to prepare for your exit.
• Always stay away from the wheels of a bus.

Drivers should also take a moment to remind themselves of important ways to safely share the road with children around.

• In all 50 states, it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped.
• The yellow flashing lights on a school bus indicate that they are preparing to stop in order to pick up or drop of children.
• Red flashing lights indicate that children are getting on or off the bus.
• Traffic in both directions on undivided roadways must stop while red lights are flashing. Do not attempt to pass a stopped school bus with red lights on.
• Remember that children are unpredictable and often ignore potential hazards.
• Never block a crosswalk.
• Always stop when indicated to do so by an adult crossing guard.
• Take extra caution near school zones, parks, and residential areas.
• The most common cause of collisions with bicycles are drivers turning left or right in front of the path of a bicycle.
• Check your mirrors before opening any doors when parked on the street to reduce the chance of a bicyclist riding into it
