WSFD Responds to a Water Rescue

West Sacramento, CA, August 16, 2014 –

Location: Sacramento River, North of the Tower Bridge

At approximately 0908 Saturday morning West Sacramento Fire Department personnel responded

to a report a male subject in distress in the Sacramento River. Units responded to find the subject

clinging to a piling in the river approximately 50 feet off shore. The male subject had apparently fallen

from a motorized wheel chair/scooter into the river where the swift moving current had quickly pulled

him away from the shoreline. Responding units donned appropriate personal protective equipment

enroute and were prepared upon arrival to affect a rescue. E44 arrived first on scene 0915. The crew

immediately anchored in with appropriate rope rigging while a rescue swimmer entered the water

for victim retrieval. Simultaneously T45 and Boat 41 assisted in preparing alternate rescue options

and establishing downstream protection for both the rescuer and victim. Battalion 45 arrived and

established Sacramento River Command. The weakened victim was rapidly reached and secured by the

rescuer. The onshore crews then began a controlled retraction of the victim. Once ashore the patient

was stabilized, packaged and transported by Boat 41 to the Broderick Boat Ramp where an awaiting

ambulance transported the victim to a local hospital in stable condition. The time of arrival of the first

unit on scene to the time which the victim was safely ashore was less than 5 minutes.
