THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND URGENT FROM THE RAMSEY POLICE:

On August 15, 2014 at approximately 9:33PM the Ramsey Police Department was dispatched to the intersection N. Franklin Turnpike and Hilltop regarding a pedestrian that was struck. It was also reported that the vehicle left the scene. Upon arrival at the scene Ptlm. Michael Canonico found 55 year old Kew Gardens NY man lying severely injured in the southbound lane of North Franklin Turnpike. The victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in New York with severe head trauma. The victim was later airlifted to Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla NY, where he remains in critical condition.

A witness to the hit and run crash stated that she observed an older model four door sedan, either grey or light blue, described as an older “police type” vehicle, strike the victim while he was walking across Hilltop Road on North Franklin Turnpike. The suspect vehicle was travelling west on Hilltop Road and was crossing North Franklin Turnpike when the crash occurred. The witness also stated that the suspect vehicle continued across North Franklin Turnpike and onto Spring Street towards Rt. 17.

Members of the Ramsey Police Department, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. The investigation was also assisted by the Mahwah Police Department, the Ramsey Ambulance Corps, the Ramsey Fire Department, the Valley Hospital, Paramedics and the Ramsey Rescue Squad.
