In pronouncing the sentence, Judge Blue cited as aggravating factors the likelihood the defendant would reoffend and the need to deter him and others from committing similar offenses.

“When you decide to have a loaded gun in your possession you’ve already decided the criminal act that you’re going to commit,” the judge said. “Whenever you decide to take a loaded gun to use…your conduct certainly does contemplate the threat of serious harm.”

Texidor admitted in his plea negotiated by Assistant Prosecutor Grace MacCaulay that he provided the handgun used in a planned robbery that turned into a killing. Two other defendants, Jevon Coleman-Robinson, M/17, of Edgewater Park, and Isaac Mimes, M/18, of Willingboro, were sentenced for their roles in the killing in June.

The three defendants admitted in their pleas that they planned to obtain marijuana from Lamar Ortiz, a 20-year-old resident of the Autumn Ridge Apartments, on July 15, 2013. They had no intention, however, of paying for it. They admitted to contacting a friend who knew Ortiz and drove with him to Ortiz’s apartment. All were aware the handgun Texidor provided to Coleman-Robinson was concealed in the car.

When they arrived Ortiz came to the vehicle’s passenger window and talked with the group. They asked him to show them the marijuana they wanted to buy and he refused. When they insisted he walked away from the car. Coleman Robinson then drew his gun and pointed it at Ortiz. Coleman-Robinson shot Ortiz as he walked away. When the passenger in the car tried to prevent Coleman-Robinson from shooting Ortiz, Texidor assaulted him.

Blue sentenced Texidor’s co-defendant Coleman Robinson to a term of 23 years incarceration in a New Jersey state prison for Aggravated Manslaughter. He must serve 85 percent of that sentence before he is eligible for parole. He also was sentenced to a concurrent term of 10 years incarceration for Aggravated Assault. Mimes was sentenced to 12 years incarceration for Armed Robbery. He must serve 85 percent of that term before he is eligible for parole.

During Friday’s sentencing Texidor stated he didn't intend for the robbery to turn into a fatal shooting, and he apologized to the victim’s family.

Kelly Jackson, a family member, spoke on the victim’s family’s behalf. She said the robbery was about more than trying to steal marijuana.

“When you bring a gun it’s about power as well and trying to exert control over someone,” the Atco resident said.

She also spoke about the family member she lost.

“Lamar was on this earth for 20 years,” she said. “He served in Afganistan as a soldier. He was by no means a perfect man but he was a loving man.”
