PG&E Telephone Scam
Numerous people, in Daly City, San Mateo County and elsewhere, have recently been victims of a scam involving an alleged PG&E employee who calls on the telephone and tells the receiver that he/she is months behind on payments and that service would be cut immediately if payment isn’t made immediately. The caller is very convincing and instructs the receiver to pay the overdue amount with a “GreenDot MoneyPak” card—purchased at convenience or drugstores. In several cases, people have bought the cards, called back the alleged PG&E employee and provided the identifying numbers on the back of the money cards. PG&E advises they never solicit payment by phone and will not threaten to suddenly disconnect service. People have lost thousands of dollars in this scam. Always call and confirm with the company before making payment. Furthermore, DO NOT call the telephone number the caller gave you—that number is not real either. If you have questions about the legitimacy of a call about a past due bill, please call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. You may also report this to [email protected]. Please spread the word and do not fall victim to this scam!
