Notable Cases
On Tuesday, 07-15-14 at 11:12 a.m., Officer Mario Busalacchi stopped vehicle on Mission Street near John Daly Boulevard for an expired registration. The officer noticed that the driver was unable to sit still, was talking extremely fast and appeared to be nervous. Officer Busalacchi asked the driver if he had been arrested before, and he said he was arrested approximately one week ago for having approximately 28 grams of marijuana on his person. The officer conducted some field sobriety tests on the driver and determined the driver was under the influence. The driver, a 29-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance.
On Thursday, 07-17-14 at 2:50 a.m., Officer Tiffany Cook was on patrol in the area of Mission Street and Hillside Boulevard and saw an adult female staggering and talking to herself. Officer Cook asked the 23-year old Daly City resident if she was under the influence, and the subject replied, “Maybe”. Officer Cook felt the subject’s pulse, and it was beating higher than the average—which is one of the symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The subject said she uses random drugs, but that she had been drug-free for two weeks—except that she may have used PCP 48 hours prior. After conducting some field sobriety tests, Officer Cook arrested the subject for being under the influence.
On Saturday, 07-19-14 at 12:25 a.m., Sergeant Eddie Klier stopped a vehicle for running a red light at the intersection of Geneva Avenue and Schwerin Street. The driver said he didn’t realize he ran a red light because he was talking to his female passenger. Sergeant Klier recognized the driver, who admitted he was on “searchable probation” for prior arrests for possession of a firearm and a stolen vehicle. Sergeant Klier instructed the occupants to sit on the sidewalk while he searched the vehicle. He located a square shaped plastic device in the console, and when he manipulated the plastic piece, the device discharged a gel-type fluid onto the passenger seat, as well as on his uniform. Sergeant Klier then immediately realized the item was a tear gas weapon. The male subject, a 21-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for being in possession of a tear gas weapon while being a convicted felon. The passenger was arrested for having an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and was in possession of a controlled substance.

Scams/Other
PG&E Phone Scam
On 07-17-14, a local Daly City business partner of a restaurant received a phone call from someone claiming to be from PG&E customer service. The caller said the business was two months behind in their payments and that service would be cut in one hour if $1,333 wasn’t paid immediately. The caller instructed the business partner to pay with a “GreenDot MoneyPak” card. The caller kept phoning the business partner until he paid. PG&E says they never solicit payment by phone and will not threaten to disconnect service suddenly. This has been happening all throughout the Bay Area for several months. Please spread the word and do not fall victim to this scam! Always call and confirm with the company before making payment. And DO NOT use the telephone number the caller gave you. That is not real either.
On Saturday, 07-19-14 another Daly City business owner received a phone call from a male subject claiming to work for PG&E and said the power to her business was going to be shut off if she didn’t pay the $420 bill immediately. The owner attempted to pay with a credit card over the phone, but the subject instructed her to obtain a GreenDot moneypak card from 7-Eleven. The victim made the purchase, called the suspect back and gave him the information. After the victim became suspicious, she called the police. The officer called the number back, and the subject hung up when the officer identified himself.
Mexican Jail Phone Scam
This occurred in Capitola, but it could occur here. On 07-15-14, an 89-year old male reported being defrauded of $88,900. The victim said his wife received a phone call from who they believed was their grandson stating he was arrested in Mexico after a fight. The caller told the victim’s wife he was being held in a Mexican jail and needed $84,000 to hire a lawyer in Mexico. The caller asked the victim’s wife not to discuss why they were transferring the money to Mexico because the bank would contact U.S. law enforcement. The caller provided instructions and account information for the fund transfer. The victims stated they feared for the safety of who they believed to be their grandson so they transferred the money. Several days later, the victims received another call from who they believed was their grandson asking for additional funds for travel expenses. The caller asked the victims to purchase pre-paid debit cards in the amount of $5,000. The victims purchased the prepaid debit cards and provided the suspect with the debit card account information, and the funds were drawn immediately. The victims later learned their grandson was never in Mexico, and they were scammed. This scam sickens me. Please spread the word about this. Always verify information before acting upon calls like this.
Community Events
National Night Out, Tuesday, August 5, 2014
National Night Out is on August 5, 2014, and it generally goes from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. National Night Out is an annual nationwide event designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and unity, raise crime prevention awareness, develop partnerships between the city and the community, and to spread the word to criminals letting them that neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back. For the past few years, the Daly City Police Department, along with other local police departments, has been participating in an event held at the Target store parking lot in Colma (at 5001 Junipero Serra Boulevard). Last year, there were police cars, fire trucks, SWAT vehicles, K-9 demonstrations and other booths. The same event is planned this year from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Please join us for a fun-filled event with various activities that include Police and Fire demonstrations, arts and crafts and face painting. Prizes and giveaways will be available to those in attendance.
This year, in addition to that event, we would like the neighborhood associations as well as individuals not in a neighborhood association to spread the word and host a neighborhood gathering. Hosting a National Night Out gathering is a simple way for people to meet one another, have fun, and explore how they might work together to improve the safety and quality of their neighborhood. Whether you have a block party, barbecue, or just a simple “meet and greet” event, I encourage you to do so. Please let us know if you intend on hosting an event, and I will try my best to arrange a patrol officer to visit your gathering. Please contact me at (650) 746-8373 or [email protected].
