LOCATION: 8100 block Carmel Street
DATE: 07/16/14 9:00 pm

Details

GILROY, CA. On July 16, 2014, at about 9:00 pm, the Gilroy Police Department and the Gilroy Fire Department responded to the 8100 block of Carmel Street to a report of a 24-year-old male with a severe hand injury.

After talking with several witnesses, it was determined the male ignited an illegal mortar-type firework that exploded while it was still in his right hand. He also sustained burns to various parts of his body, including his face. He was subsequently flown to a Bay Area Hospital for treatment and he is expected to survive.

The Gilroy Police Department, in coordination with the Gilroy Fire Department, would like to remind everyone that fireworks are both illegal and dangerous. Any individual who possesses, stores, sells, or uses any materials deemed to be fireworks, is in violation of the law and subject to arrest. Violations of these laws can result in a fine up to $1,000 and possible jail time.

The City of Gilroy does allow the use of State-approved SAFE and SANE fireworks in designated areas, but only July 1 through July 4.
