On 07/13/2014 Janesville Police Department Street Crimes Unit (SCU) Officers were working an interdiction operation focusing on thefts from motor vehicles. At 01:45 AM Officer Holford III located a group of three people suspiciously walking around in the 1200 block of N Grant Ave. Officer Holford III took up a position to observe the activities of the three suspects. Officer Holford III saw them entering unlocked vehicles parked on the roadway. SCU and Janesville Police Department Patrol Officers coordinated efforts in taking the three suspects into custody after short foot pursuits. The three suspects were arrested and taken to the Rock County Jail where they were held pending court appearances.
Several items were recovered from the three suspects. Items recovered included small electronics, currency, wallets, and purses. There is continued investigation into this incident, and additional charges may be added as more victims are identified.
Public Safety Reminder:
The Janesville Police Department strongly recommends citizens be diligent about locking their vehicles, and removing or concealing electronics (GPS, Cellular Phones, IPods, etc.) and personal articles (wallets, purses, credit cards, etc.) if they are parking on the roadway or in a driveway. Theft from Motor Vehicles typically are a crime of opportunity, and taking the extra time to lock the doors of vehicles will aid in reducing chances of citizens being victimized.
