The Burlington Police Department would like to provide some basic information to residents of Burlington on how to properly dispose of needles or other sharps found in the city. The City of Burlington, as a community, strives to be a clean and beautiful place for all who enjoy its many great qualities.
If you find what appears to be a needle, syringe, or other sharp item used for medical treatment on the ground, either on your own property or public property, do not touch it. The Burlington Police Department recommends you contact the city’s Needle Pick-Up program at 488-6067. You can also report the found needle/sharp through Burlington’s “SeeClickFix” website at http://en-us.seeclickfix.com/burlington_2. Once the sharp is reported either through the Needle Pick-Up Program or SeeClickFix, a trained representative from their program will come collect the sharp at their earliest availability.
The Burlington Police Department does not recommend you attempt to touch, move, or collect the sharp on your own, however if you feel it is of immediate danger to others and choose not to use the above two options, the Vermont Department of Health has provided an informational flyer on the proper way to discard of Sharps on your own. If you do decide to dispose of the sharp yourself, we urge you to use caution as diseases like Hepatitis B & C and HIV can be spread by being stuck with a sharp that was used by someone else.
