Advisory

AS HURRICANE ARTHUR MOVES NORTHEAST OFF THE COAST IT IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN. HEAVY RAIN IS EXPECTED. MAJOR THREAT OF RIP CURRENTS.

OCEAN VIEW POLICE STORM BRIEFING:

• Hurricane Arthur strengthened into a Category 2 storm overnight. Maximum sustained winds are now near 100 mph with higher gusts. At 900 AM, the center of Arthur was located about 130 miles off the Virginia coast, moving northeast at 23 MPH. Arthur’s forward motion is expected to increase as it continues to move northeast and gradually weaken. It will pass well off the Delaware and New Jersey coasts today.
• Precipitation associated with Arthur will affect both Delaware and New Jersey through the afternoon hours. Rain will be heavy at times, resulting in rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour in spots. Flash flooding, along with street and poor drainage flooding, can be expected. A flash flood watch remains in effect for all of Delaware and small adjacent section of the Maryland eastern shore, as well as southern and eastern New Jersey. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected in eastern Pennsylvania associated with a slow moving cold front, but rainfall rates are expected to be lower with that system. Showers and thunderstorms should end in most areas by early this evening.
• Tides will not be an issue with this hurricane.
• North to northeast winds will gradually turn to the northwest later today as Arthur passes by. Expect wind speeds in the 15 to 25 mph range with gusts up to 40 mph possible right on the coast. Winds speeds will be less further inland.
• Rip currents will be a MAJOR threat throughout the July 4th holiday weekend, even though Saturday and Sunday look very nice weather-wise in the wake of Arthur.
• This will be the final briefing package for this event unless significant changes occur. Stay tuned to the latest weather information at www.weather.gov/phi.
