Notable Cases
On Monday, 06-02-14 at 11:48 p.m., Officer Jaime Bermudez and Officer Garrett Larsen responded to the area of Accacia Street and Otillia Street on a report of two subjects looking into vehicles. While the officers were searching for the subjects, they were flagged down in the area of Partridge Avenue and Rio Verde Street by a subject who said he had just been robbed. The 49-year old victim said he was robbed by two subjects who kicked and punched him and took his backpack. Officers located two male subjects in the area and found the victim’s property in their possession. One subject, a 16-year old Daly City resident, was booked into the Youth Services Center. The other subject, a 19-year old Daly City resident, was booked into the San Mateo County Jail. These subjects also confessed to being responsible for another recent robbery in the area.
On Tuesday, 06-03-14 at 9:00 a.m., Officer David Farrar was assigned to address the quality of life issues involving the illegal occupancy in a residence on the unit block of West Cavour Street. A resident in the neighborhood reported transients entering and staying at the residence and reported possible narcotics activity. Officer Farrar and the owner of the home attempted to enter the house to inspect it and to make the necessary repairs to stop transients from entering the residence and found out the locks were changed. They met with a subject at the top of the stairs who refused to come down to talk to the officers. The 25-year old subject became belligerent with the officers and said he had been renting the home for over a year. The owner said that no one was renting the home. The subject was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest.
On Wednesday, 06-04-14 at 5:35 p.m., Officer Lucas Taylor stopped a subject pushing a Home Depot shopping cart crossing eastbound on Forest Grove Drive at Castlemont Drive. Officer Taylor said the subject started reaching into his pocket, and he told the subject to take his hand out of his pocket. Officer Taylor asked if he could search him for any illegal contraband, and the subject refused. The officer noticed the subject appeared to be under the influence, and he advised the subject he was going to perform some evaluations to determine if he was under the influence. After performing some tests, Officer Taylor determined that the 28-year old transient subject was indeed under the influence of a controlled substance and placed him under arrest. Incident to arrest, Officer Taylor searched the subjects pocket and found a counterfeit $20 bill. He searched the subject’s backpack and found a hypodermic needed which contained a brown liquid substance believed to be heroin in the syringe and also small plastic bag containing a white crystalline substance. In addition to this, the officer found mail not belonging to the subject. The subject was then booked not only for being under the influence of a controlled substance but also for being in possession of controlled substances, counterfeit U.S. currency and stolen property.
On Friday, 06-06-14 at 5:47 a.m., Officer Garrett Larsen and Officer Jay Mulitauopele were dispatched to the 500 block of Westmoor Avenue on a report of a domestic disturbance in which the male half reported his wife had thrown boiling water onto his left leg, left foot, left hand and crotch area. The 55-year old victim was transported to the hospital via ambulance where he was treated for second degree burns. His 64-year old wife was also taken to the hospital for a complaint of pain, but due to her medical state, she was not taken into custody. A complaint is sought against her for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence.
On Saturday, 06-07-14 at 4:05 a.m., Officer Shane Hart stopped a subject on the 3100 block of Geneva Avenue whom he arrested the week before for possession of rock cocaine. Officer Hart said the 31-year old San Francisco resident appeared nervous and immediately placed his hand in his pocket. When the officer asked the subject if he had any drugs on him, the subject removed his hand from his pocket and held a small plastic bindle containing rock cocaine. The subject asked the officer to give him another chance. The subject was then arrested for possession of rock cocaine and for committing a felony while out on bail. His girlfriend, a 37-year old San Rafael resident was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
On Saturday, 06-07-14 at 8:30 a.m., a 62-year old female Daly City resident was the victim of a hit and run collision as she was walking in a crosswalk at Brunswick Street and Templeton Avenue. The victim described the suspect vehicle as a “white or silver SUV” and said the driver did not slow down or stop. The victim was taken to the hospital for injuries to the head, right elbow and right leg.
On Saturday, 06-07-14 at 11:15 p.m., Officer Nicholas Ottoboni and Officer Peter Skeehan were on patrol in the area of Mission Street and Evergreen Avenue and stopped two subjects standing on the corner. One subject became extremely agitated after officers found some shotgun shells in his jacket pocket. Officer Ottoboni attempted to place handcuffs on the subject, and he twisted away and started to flee on foot. Officers caught up with the subject, a 29-year old Daly City resident, and found out he had not provided his correct name. It was determined he had an outstanding $250,000 warrant from Daly City. Because there were shotgun shells in the subject’s pocket, officers searched for a gun. They found an unloaded revolver in the bushes near where the subjects were, and they asked the subject where the shotgun was. The subject informed the officers there were more firearms in a vehicle in the area. The officers located the shotgun in the vehicle. The subject was arrested for the warrant and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Scams/Other
“Jury Summons” Scam
If you receive a phone call from someone posing as a police officer and demanding money to pay for a “jury summons warrant,” this is a scam. Please don’t fall for it! This happened twice in Palo Alto last week. Residents received phone calls from “an official sounding man” who identified himself as a police officer. In both cases, the suspect claimed the victims had missed a jury duty appearance and now had outstanding $1,000 warrants for their arrest. In order to take care of the warrants, the suspect told the victims they needed to go to a 7-Eleven store and obtain two $500 “Green Dot MoneyPaks” (a reloadable debit card) and provide him with the unique identifying number on the back of the card. One victim actually purchased a $500 card and provided the number to the suspect. The other victim became suspicious and notified the police. In both cases, the victims were in their late 60’s and 70’s. It is unknown if the suspect intentionally targeted older individuals. Similar cases have been popping up in the Bay Area. Please know that police officers will never solicit cash from you over the phone to take care of an outstanding warrant. If you receive such a call, please note the number from which the call originated and notify us immediately at (650) 991-8119. Please spread the word to your friends and family about this scam.
