Suspect taken into custody - Fruitport Township daytime home invasion.

At approximately 10:48 a.m. on Monday, 05/26/2014, officers from Fruitport Township Police Department were dispatched to the 2300 block of East Broadway Avenue in Fruitport Township regarding a daytime home invasion.

A resident in that area called 9-1-1 to report having been awakened by the family dog as a male subject – who the resident did not know – was at the back slider door of the residence. The resident watched the male subject as he walked to the side door of the residence and started to enter the residence through an unlocked door.

The resident confronted the male subject who then left the residence and fled on foot. Police searched nearby residential areas and located the male subject described by the victim. Upon seeing the police, the male subject continued to flee on foot. Officers from Norton Shores Police Department and Muskegon Heights Police Department assisted in setting up a perimeter.

The male subject was spotted by a Norton Shores officer as the subject crossed US-31 and ran into a wooded area on the west side of US-31. The male subject was taken into custody in that area by a Norton Shores officer. The subject was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail. The suspect is currently on parole for prior home invasion convictions.

A bag containing valuables was discarded by the suspect when he fled from police. Police are trying to determine whether the items in the bag were from other criminal acts in the area. Fruitport Township Police Department took complaints of items being stolen during the overnight hours from unlocked vehicles in the Cloverville area. Other reports were received indicating unlocked vehicles had been rummaged through, without anything being stolen.

Police are still investigating if there is a link between the home invasion suspect and the larcenies from vehicles. It is possible, due to residents travelling during the holiday weekend, additional criminal acts may not be discovered until the residents return home.

No further information, including the suspect’s name, is being released at this time.
