LOCATION: South State Street (M-66) near Lake Street,
City of Stanton
Montcalm County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a two vehicle crash which also caused damage to a natural gas line.
The investigation revealed that a 1992 Ford F-150 pickup towing a boat driven by a forty-six year old Saranac man was traveling north on South State Street and was attempting to turn into a drive. A 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by a fifty-seven year old Howard City woman was also traveling north however did not see the signal on the turning vehicle and struck the boat. The Jeep then left the roadway striking a natural gas line owned by Consumers Energy causing a gas leak. Members of the Stanton Fire Department responded to the crash scene and assisted with evacuating a small number of nearby residents.
South State Street was closed for approximately three hours while the crash scene was cleaned up and the gas leak was repaired. All of the people involved in the crash were wearing their seatbelts. No one was injured as a result of the crash or the gas leak. The graduation ceremony for Central Montcalm Public Schools was occurring at the same time and, except for some minor traffic issues, the ceremony was not affected.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Stanton Fire Department, Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services, and Consumers Energy.
