PHONE SCAM ALERT: "Missed Jury Service." Don't be a victim!

The "Missed Jury Service" phone scam has been around since 2005 but recently resurfaced in your neighborhood. A caller informs you that you missed jury service and there's an arrest warrant issued for you.

One version of the scam, if you tell the caller you did not receive a jury summons, he/she will ask you for personal identifying information (social security number, driver license number, date of birth, etc) to "verify" whether or not you received a summons. In another version of the scam, the caller claims he/she can resolve the warrant if you pay a fine. The caller will give you an option to have a deputy go to your house to collect the fine or you can meet a deputy at a local convenience store so you can pay the fine via pre-paid gift cards. DO NOT FALL VICTIM.

Government agencies, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department WILL NEVER ask you for personal information over the phone or demand payment in cash or pre-paid gift cards. Safeguard yourself. If you have any doubt of the legitimacy of a representative of a government agency, contact that agency directly at their publicly listed telephone numbers to inquire about the authenticity of the caller's claim.

Anyone receiving a suspicious phone call should call their local law enforcement agency.
