Parking overnight in Town? Please read this important message before doing so from this time forward.

For the past sixteen months, the combined municipality of Princeton has considered numerous options to address the current parking situation in the town, and specifically the disparity between the numerous parking ordinances from each of the former municipalities in terms of overnight parking regulations. The town, the community and the police department have worked during this time to find a common ground and a solution that is amenable to all involved parties. While the Town and the Police Department understand that this is an extremely sensitive area to many, the time has come to standardize the actions taken by the Police Department in terms of enforcement and any allowances that can be made by the Police Department.

Over the course of the next calendar month, the Police Department will be phasing in a new standard in which parking permissions will not be granted for overnight parking on any street where overnight parking is prohibited. The purpose of this ‘grace’ period is to educate the community about the new standard. Parking exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the shift commander in the event of emergency or other extraordinary circumstances. Residents that possess a parking permit will be allowed to park only on streets where their permit is recognized as valid. Parking permits are available to residents through the Town Clerk’s Office for a fee.

The Princeton Police Department recognizes that parking issues are a concern for the residential community as well as those visitors to Princeton. With this first step in place, we will continue to work with the Princeton community toward a permanent solution to our current parking issues that will be satisfactory to all those involved.

This policy will be in effect until such time as the ordinances have been harmonized in which to address the parking requirements.
