Community

This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators week.

Each year, the second week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as Public Safety Telecommunicators. In the early 1990’s, Congress proclaimed it as a nationally recognized week of appreciation.

Montclair Police Dispatchers attend a three week certified dispatch training course and receive six months of on the job training before becoming a solo independent dispatcher. Montclair Police Dispatchers also attend community events and educate the public on their job responsibilities.

The Montclair Police Department’s Dispatch Center is staffed with seven full-time positions and four part-time positions. In 2013, the Montclair Police Department Dispatch Center received 37,517 non-emergency calls and 8,558 emergency (911) calls.

Public Safety Dispatchers are actually the true “first responders.” They respond to emergencies before police and fire personnel. They are the first contact an individual has when reporting a crime or an emergency to the Police Department. They work around the clock, all year round, to provide support to the officers in the field and help keep the City of Montclair safe.

On behalf of the Montclair Police Department, we want to thank our Dispatchers for their commitment and dedication to the Department and the Community.
