Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

Notable Cases

Update and case closure—on the 03-14-14 bulletin, I reported that a female was robbed at the Bank of America ATM on Gellert Boulevard. The robber was caught in Arizona and also admitted to five robberies in the East Bay.

On Thursday, 04-03-14 at 1:45 a.m., Officer Joshua Moala was on patrol in the area of Mission Street and Hillcrest Street and saw a pedestrian not in the crosswalk crossing the street. Officer Moala noticed the subject was speaking rapidly, and while conducting a records check on the subject, the officer learned the subject was on court probation for being under the influence of a controlled substance and also on parole for robbery. Officer Moala searched the subject, a 30-year old Oakland resident, and found a clear glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine. The subject agreed to take a field sobriety test. After determining the subject was under the influence, Officer Moala arrested him for possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of a controlled substance and a parole violation.

On Saturday, 04-05-14 at 12:34 a.m., Officer Keith Mattos was on patrol in the area of MacDonald Avenue and Talbert Street when he saw a vehicle enter the parking lot of the Chevron gas station on Bayshore Boulevard. The gas station was closed for the evening, and Officer Mattos saw the vehicle go directly to the rear of the building. Thinking this was suspicious, Officer Mattos drove behind the vehicle and observed a female run from between two cars and quickly enter the vehicle which was previously only occupied by the driver. Officer Mattos quickly exited his vehicle and contacted the driver who couldn’t provide the name of the female passenger, and the passenger couldn’t provide the name of the driver. Officer Mattos informed them of their suspicious activity and asked if they were involved in any drug activity. The driver advised he wasn’t and gave consent for the officer to search his vehicle and person. Officer Mattos located a prescription bottle in the center console. The prescription bottled contained 60 Oxycontin pills, and the name on the bottle was not the driver’s name. The driver, a 38-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

On Saturday, 04-05-14 at 10:21 p.m., Officer Nicholas Ottoboni was on patrol in the area of John Daly Boulevard and Santa Barbara Avenue when he stopped a vehicle for a registration violation. The officer asked the passenger to step out of the vehicle and noticed he was limping as he was walking. Officer Ottoboni found a loaded firearm concealed on the driver’s leg. The passenger, a 33-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed firearm (not the registered owner) and for being a felon in possession of ammunition. The driver, also a 33-year old San Francisco resident, was issued a citation for driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance.

Robberies

There was one attempted robbery during the past week.

On Monday, 03-31-14 at 8:47 p.m., Officer Bonnie Shiu was dispatched to a report of a robbery that just occurred at the Jack in the Box. The 17-year old victim advised he arranged to meet with an unidentified subject who contacted him via Craigslist regarding a pair of “Jordans” shoes for sale. After an exchange of text messages, the victim and the unidentified subject arranged to meet at the Jack in the Box. The victim said he met with two male subjects near the drive-thru area. One subject was described as a black male adult, 19-21 years old, 5-10, thin mustache, dark complexion, slim build and wearing a black hooded sweater with dark colored jeans. The other subject was described as a black male adult, 19-21 years old, 5-10, slim build, lighter complexion and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with blue jeans. The victim began to speak about the size of the shoes, and the first subject said it wasn’t his correct size and then said, “You made me come from SF for nothing.” At that point, the victim said the subject then grabbed him by his arm and threw him to the ground. The victim said the other subject ran away. The victim said he tried defending himself until he saw a silver gun with a tan colored handle fall out of the suspect’s pocket and land on the ground. The victim heard a female voice yelling, “Leave him alone, get off of him”, and then the victim said the suspect picked up the gun and fled. This case has been forwarded to detectives.

“Little Boxes: the Legacy of Henry Doelger”

Did you know there is a documentary film about the “Little Boxes”? Two weeks ago, I attended a free screening of the 45 minute documentary celebrating the life and works of Bay Area real estate development icon Henry Doelger. Mr. Doelger was a pioneer of Mid-Century Modern design, and this film shows the concept of Westlake and how it was built from nothing. Having grown up in a Doelger home, I found this film fascinating. There is one more upcoming free showing of this documentary on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Gellert Library in the Community Room. It should be noted that the time was changed from 7:00 p.m. (They may show it again at 7:00 p.m. if too many people attend.) I encourage you to attend. You will be pleasantly entertained!
