Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Gang Diversion Team and UC Irvine Collaborative Event for At-Risk Youth

DATE: Saturday, April 12, 2014

TIME: 9:30AM-5:00PM

LOCATION:

UC Irvine Campus

5300 Social and Behavioral Sciences Gateway

Irvine, CA 92697

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Gang Diversion Team, in collaboration with University of California at Irvine, will be hosting a first annual “incentive-outing” to expose at-risk students to college life.

This event will take place on the campus of UC Irvine, and representatives from UCI’s School of Social Ecology, Veterans Professional Fraternity, and Carson Sheriff’s Station will be volunteering for this event. The theme of the day is “Choose Your Path.”

All participating junior high and high school students, from the Carson area, have shown interest in continuing their education after high school. This event will expose these youths to college life on campus, and they can look forward to a tour of the campus; motivational speeches by various members of faculty and law enforcement; watch an exciting home baseball game; and be part of interactive lab demonstrations on campus. By giving them this small taste of college life, the LA County Sheriff’s Department hopes that these students will be motivated not only to finish high school, but take their education to the next level.

The Gang Diversion Team is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and positive-community organizations that provide innovative plans to reduce the thought of gang membership and participation. The target population is at-risk youth and gang-affiliated individuals, of all ages, residing in the Carson area. This is an innovative program in which the community serves as the setting for services tailored to high-risk youths. The primary goal of the team is to get the youth involved in various activities and services from community-based organizations that best meet their needs.
