Robber Disarmed by 7-Eleven Employees

On Friday night at 11:55 PM, an armed suspect entered the 7-Eleven Store located at 333 E. 14th St. and attempted to rob the store.

Two employees were working behind the sales counter when a man, wearing a ski mask covering his face, entered the store with a handgun. The suspect attempted to rob the cashiers, but was stopped when they tried to apprehend him.

Both employees charged the armed suspect and attempted to detain him until police arrived. There was a brief struggle, in which the suspect managed to escape, leaving the handgun behind. The suspect was last seen running on Bellview Dr. towards San Leandro Blvd. He was further described as being approximately six feet tall, with a thin build.

When officers arrived at the store, the clerks gave them the handgun. Additional officers searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him.

“We are extremely lucky that no one was injured during this violent crime. Although we do not advocate that anyone approach someone with a deadly weapon, such as a knife or firearm, the quick actions of both employees disarmed the suspect and took a gun off of the street that could have been used in another robbery, or a shooting. Their actions were very brave,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.

Police detectives will use the store’s surveillance video in an attempt to identify the suspect and network with other law enforcement agencies, to determine whether or not this suspect may be responsible for similar crimes in the East Bay.
