L.A. COUNTY DEPUTIES REVEAL THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND DRUG USE

City’s J-Team to Host Two Informative Workshops for Parents

The City of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Juvenile Intervention Team (J-Team) will host two FREE events this April to educate parents about the dangers and misconceptions associated with drugs and social media.

Peer influencers often predict drug use for other teens, and some youth are more likely to fall for peer pressure in order to fit in.  To help deter youth from drug use, Detective Bill Velek will present “What You Don’t Know: Teens, Drugs and the Consequences,” on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  The presentation will educate parents on current trends and behaviors associated with drugs, focusing where teens get drugs, where they use them, and how they hide drugs from family members and school officials.

“One of the City Council’s top priorities is the health of our youth, and this includes their ability to avoid peer pressure and stay off drugs,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “By implementing interactive workshops and supporting local programs like DFYIT, we are taking positive steps to educate our teens on the dangers associated with drug use, and empowering them to make positive choices.”

In addition to “fitting in” with their peers at school, teens flock to social media platforms to stay connected with friends. However, they are also unknowingly being exposed to certain online dangers by doing so.  On Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Deputy Josh Dublin will uncover those risks with “Teens Cell Phones, Sexting and Social Media” workshop.  This interactive presentation will focus on what parents should know when it comes to technology, and how to keep the lines of communication open.

Both workshops will be held in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.  For more information or to register for these two events, please call (661) 250-3720 or visit Santa-Clarita.com/Seasons
