Train vs. Auto Collision

On March 26th, 2014 at 9:10 pm a San Jose bound Union Pacific cargo train collided with a vehicle resulting in the death of a 20 year old solo female driver. According to witnesses and evidence at the scene, it appears the driver was travelling westbound on East Central Avenue from Butterfield Boulevard. The driver continued westbound, driving over a curb, onto the sidewalk and eventually onto the railroad tracks. The Union Pacific train struck the 1990’s model SUV at approximately 40-50 mph, head-on. The driver was trapped in the vehicle until she was extracted by Morgan Hill Fire. She was later transported to a local trauma hospital by CalStar, where she succumb to major injuries.

Alcohol or drugs have not been ruled out as a factor in the collision for the driver of the SUV, however a final determination will not be made until the toxicology test results are completed. A concurrent investigation has also been initiated by Union Pacific Police and the Morgan Hill Police Department.
