JOINT EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT STATEMENT

Township of Barnegat and Township of Ocean, New Jersey

Winter Weather Statement - Minor Snow Event
Tuesday, March 25, 2014 -- 3:00pm

While an approaching coastal storm will stay well off shore tonight, the Ocean County area will still experience winter weather during the overnight hours. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for Ocean County for 2-4 inches of snow with locally heavier amounts possible.

Precipitation should start between 3:00pm and 5:00pm this afternoon. The precipitation may start off as a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow, but will change over to all snow by sunset. Besides wet roads, the Tuesday evening commute should not be adversely impacted by the storm but the Wednesday morning commute will be slippery as roads will be slush covered and icy.

With temperatures slightly above freezing this afternoon, any snowfall during the daylight hours will only accumulate on grass and other non-paved surfaces. However, after sunset, temperatures will fall below freezing and snow will start to accumulate on paved surfaces. Also, winds will increase during the night and will be sustained at 25mph with gust of 45mph, especially along the bayfront and lagoon areas of both communities.

In preparation for the approaching winter weather, roads have been pretreated with a salt solution and Barnegat and Ocean Townships are fully ready to respond to winter road conditions resulting from this storm. Snow fighting equipment is ready to be dispatched and adequate supplies of road salt are readily available for this storm.

Again, a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been issued for the Ocean County area for 2-4 inches of snow with locally heavier amounts possible. The Wednesday morning commute will be impacted by the storm as roads will be slushy and slippery. As always, motorists should exercise caution when driving on roads affected by winter weather conditions.
