(HOUSTON, TX) – A Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been terminated from his employment after an internal investigation revealed he attempted to steal money he was supposed to have confiscated and held as evidence.

Jason Henry Hayes is charged with theft by a public servant and tampering with evidence after the HCSO’s Internal Affairs Division conducted a criminal investigation of allegations Hayes attempted to steal money from a game room raid he was taking part in on February 7, 2014. Both charges are 3rd degree felonies.

Hayes, 33, had been employed with the Sheriff’s Office since 2004. He was assigned to the Game Room Task Force and was terminated on March 20, 2014.

“Make no mistake, I will take a deputy’s badge away when he/she decides to abuse the responsibility and authority that comes with wearing the Sheriff’s Office blue and gold,” said Sheriff Adrian Garcia. “Too many honest and hardworking deputies have sacrificed a great deal; some have paid the ultimate sacrifice! I will not let someone like Hayes trample on their good name or on the integrity of the many good and honest employees. The great majority of our employees take extremely seriously the trust placed on them by the public, and I will do all I can to protect their integrity from being tarnished by the actions of a few.”
