Notable Cases

On Thursday, 03-13-14 at 9:00 p.m., Officer Keith Mattos was dispatched to a hit and run traffic collision in the area of Highway 35 and John Daly Boulevard. A bicyclist was lying in the exit lane, and there were broken pieces of the suspect vehicle’s right side mirror at the scene. The mirror had the word “Mazda” on it. As Officer Mattos was at the scene, a Broadmoor Police officer stopped a black Mazda with a missing mirror. The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year old Daly City resident, initially denied hitting the bicyclist. He subsequently admitted to it (after the mirror matched up perfectly), and he was arrested for hit and run. The victim, a 41-year old Daly City resident, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with a complaint of pain and possible internal injuries.

On Thursday, 03-13-14 at 3:32 p.m., Sgt. Mike Brennan and Sgt. Alex Rohleder were in an unmarked police vehicle, assigned to the Crime Suppression Unit when they attempted to pull over a vehicle for speeding in the area of Southgate Avenue and St. Francis Boulevard. Sgt. Brennan noticed the driver appeared nervous, and the driver advised he was on parole for robbery. Sgt. Brennan asked the driver, a 40-year old Daly City resident, if he could search him for weapons or narcotics, and the driver agreed. Sgt. Brennan asked the driver to put his hands behind his back, and then noticed a plastic bag containing suspected heroin drop on the ground. The driver realized what happened, and he immediately tried to grab the bag from the ground and put it in his mouth to swallow it. As Sgt. Brennan was trying to prevent the suspect from grabbing the bag, the suspect became combative. The driver was arrested for possession of heroin, resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer, attempting to destroy/conceal evidence, violating his parole and for committing a felony while on bail. The passenger, a 27-year old San Francisco resident, also had heroin in her possession when the officers searched her.

On Sunday, 03-16-14 at approximately 10:30 a.m., a 65-year old Daly City resident reported that she was the victim of fraud by an unknown suspect at the Bank of America ATM on Southgate Avenue. The victim said that she went to the ATM and noticed a black female described as slender, late 20’s, 5’5, with braided hair who was waiting to use the machine and rubbing her eyes as if they were irritated. The unknown female backed away from the machine and let the victim use it first. After the victim used the ATM, the unknown female immediately began using the same ATM she just used. Later in the day, the victim checked her account on line and discovered there were several unauthorized withdrawals totaling $940. This report was referred to detectives.

On Thursday, 03-13-14 between 8:20 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., a 43-year old Daly City resident was the victim of an armed robbery at the Bank of America ATM on Gellert Boulevard. The victim said she was making a deposit when she was approached by a male who said, “This is a hold up, give me all your money, I have a gun”. The victim turned to look at the subject and noticed he had a black scarf around his face and neck. The suspect forced the victim to withdraw cash in three separate transactions. The suspect told the victim to give him her keys and cell phone and that he would put them in the garbage can and she could retrieve them after he left. The victim was unharmed. The bank’s video surveillance camera was able to capture a clear photo of the suspect. (See attached) As of this date, the suspect has not been identified.
