Press Release: Backflow Valve Theft Arrest

SUBJECT: Backflow Valve Theft Arrest

DATE/TIME: 3/3/14

LOCATION: Cedar Village at Ocean

OFFICERS INVOLVED: Detective Jeffrey Malone

ACCUSED: Matthew Dorishook age 33 Hazlet, NJ

NARRATIVE:
On 2/21/14 at approximately 12:33 pm Officer Trevor Dickerson responded the Cedar Village at Ocean community in reference to stolen brass sprinkler backflow valves. An investigation revealed that a white male in his twenties operating a black colored BMW was seen cutting and removing ten brass outdoor irrigation sprinkler backflow valves valued at approximately $1,300.00 each. The accused fled with the stolen valves prior to police arrival.

During a follow up investigation, Detective Malone discovered that a Hazlet resident by the name of Matthew Dorishook had sold similar types of backflow valves at a scrapyard in Middlesex County. Detective Malone determined that the backflow valves were consistent with those stolen in Ocean.

On 3/3/14, Detective Malone responded to Hazlet and spoke with Mr. Dorishook. Detective Malone’s investigation revealed that Mr. Dorishook was responsible for stealing the valves from Cedar Village in February. The investigation further revealed that he was involved in similar valve thefts from several other Monmouth and Middlesex county locations including Old Bridge Township. He was placed under arrest for the Ocean Township thefts.

During his arrest, Mr. Dorishook was found to be in possession of fifty (50) bags of heroin. Detective Malone charged Mr. Dorishook with theft, criminal mischief, possession of burglar’s tools and possession of heroin. Mr. Dorishook was released on complaint summonses and turned over to the Old Bridge Police Department for follow up on their investigation. Mr. Dorishook will appear at a future court hearing. Additionally, a 2009 BMW was seized under the state criminal forfeiture guidelines for being used in the commission of a crime.
