The Upper Macungie Township Police Department has an important message for you! *Scam Alert*

On February 21st, 2014 a 40 year-old Breinigsville resident reported that he was contacted by a male claiming to be a federal agent with the Department of Homeland Security. The "agent" threatened that if the male did not pay an $8,000 fee that the victim would be deported. As a result, the victim followed the directions of the "agent" and paid the fee.

Federal, State and local law enforcement will never contact you demanding to be paid money. Fees for crimes and citations are handled through the court systems, not by officers.

In this case, the "agent" insisted the victim use a "Green Dot" card to make the payment. Green Dot cards are reloadable prepaid cards that act like cash.

In the past (and even still today), scammers use Green Dot cards and Western Union to defraud the general public.

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be law enforcement and demanding money, hang up and contact your nearest police station.

As always, be safe.
