Trooper Incarcerates Man for 135 MPH on I-465

Indianapolis, IN- It has been said that many times a policeman’s day is 98% mundane and 2% of “you are not going to believe this happened” moments.

Yesterday, February 26th at approximately 2:38 p.m., Indianapolis Trooper Evan Joyner experienced one of those “moments.”

Trooper Joyner was working stationary traffic patrol on NB I-465 while parked on the right side shoulder when he observed a NB vehicle traveling at an extremely high rate of speed.

A LIDAR (Light Detecting and Ranging) radar, commonly known as laser radar, speed determination was performed and registered the 2010 Audi traveling 135 mph in 55 mph zone.

Yun Zhang, 18, of Indianapolis was arrested and incarcerated in the Marion County Arrestee Processing Center for Reckless Driving, a Class B misdemeanor.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute reported in 2013 there were 199 speed-related fatalities in Indiana. This was an increase of 7.6 percent from 2012. Approximately 26 percent of all fatalities were speed-related.

If you observe an aggressive or reckless driver call 911 and give as much information as you can including color of vehicle, plate number and direction of travel. Never try to engage or follow an aggressive, reckless or suspected impaired driver.

Further information on traffic safety can be found at the Indiana State Police website at www.in.gov/isp and the Indiana Criminal Justice Criminal Institute website at www.in.gov/cji.
