SLPD Detains Despondent Man Following Response to Home

Today, at 1:45 p.m., San Leandro Police Offices were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of Manor Blvd. regarding a despondent male adult.

Several officers responded which included officers who have been specially trained in dealing with people suffering from mental illness. The officers were able to determine that the man was home alone, and did not present a threat to the public. EMS personnel responded and staged in the immediate area. Officers contacted the man’s family and advised them of the situation. Based on all of the information known to the officers and the family members, the officers decided to leave the area, without forcing entry into the home.

“Watching law enforcement walk away from an incident like this is difficult for many to understand. However, we know from prior situations, this is the safest and best for everyone involved, as it usually deescalates the situation,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.

At 7:10 p.m. that same evening, a concerned neighbor called police and reported seeing the man outside of his house, walking in the neighborhood. Officers responded and detained him for a psychiatric evaluation, which will be conducted at the John George Psychiatric Pavilion in San Leandro.

The San Leandro Police are happy with the outcome of this incident, as no one was injured and the man will be able to receive the help that he needs.
