CAPTURED: Derek Joseph Wardlaw was taken into custody on 2/19/2014 
After an extensive nationwide search by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service, Derek Joseph Wardlaw was arrested without incident today in Los Angeles, California as he attempted to board a commercial bus for Seattle, Washington. He is currently being held without bond at a Long Beach, California detention facility. Athens-Clarke County authorities are working closely with the California authorities to arrange extradition in order for Wardlaw to be returned to face felony charges stemming from the violent attack which occurred on February 13, 2014.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department extends sincere thanks for the support received from citizens who provided tips and diligently offered assistance that certainly aided in Wardlaw’s capture. Once again this community has demonstrated that a shared responsibility between the police and public can eliminate crime, the fear of crime, and disorder in our community.
Additionally, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department extends special thanks to the local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies that assisted us in apprehending this violent offender without further incident.
