Advisory

Information on Winter Storm Warning, Discounted Parking, Emergency Snow Routes & Street Repairs

A winter storm warning is in effect for our area from midnight tonight until Friday at 6:00am. The current forecast predicts snow and sleet accumulations of 6 to 10 inches.

Discounted Garage Parking
The City is providing reduced rate parking in municipal Garage B (located on 2nd Street between Hudson and River Streets) and Garage D (215 Hudson Street) beginning Wednesday, February 12th at 8:00pm through Friday, February 14th at 8:00pm for $5 per day for residents with a valid Resident parking permit or Temporary parking permit placard. In addition, Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown garage (371 4th Street) for the same reduced rate. Garage space is available on a first-come, first-served basis and regular rates will apply at other times. Residents who wish to extend their stay in the garage and who have a parking permit decal or Temporary parking permit placard are reminded that overnight parking (8pm to 8am) is available at a rate of $5.00. This rate is available in Garages B, D and Midtown every day of the year.

Emergency Snow Routes
Drivers are reminded that vehicles parked on Emergency Snow Routes are subject to ticketing and towing when the streets are snow covered. This is necessary to move police, fire and ambulances throughout Hoboken in time of emergency for the safety and welfare of all our citizens. Emergency Snow Routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.”

A list and map of emergency snow routes is also available on the City website: www.hobokennj.org/snow.

Street Cleaning, Parking Enforcement & Plowing Parking Lanes
Following last Wednesday’s snow, sleet and freezing rain, temperatures dropped overnight and the City has been unable to plow parking lanes due to frozen conditions. As a result, street cleaning enforcement remains suspended until further notice. The weather is expected to warm next week, at which time the City plans to resume plowing to clear parking areas. In order to effectively plow parking lanes, it is vital that all vehicles are moved during street cleaning times. The City will be notifying the public when street cleaning enforcement will resume, and the public is asked to sign up for alerts by visiting www.hobokennj.org/alerts or to follow the City on Facebook (www.facebook.com/hoboken) or Twitter (www.twitter.com/cityofhoboken) or visit the City website (www.hobokennj.org) for updates.

Due to the snow and ice, some drivers have parked vehicles several feet from the curb, narrowing the roadway and potentially restricting access for plows and emergency vehicles. In addition, vehicles parked in or near crosswalks limit visibility at intersections and pose a safety issue for drivers and pedestrians alike. While street cleaning enforcement remains suspended until further notice, violations that pose a public safety or pedestrian safety concern will continue to be a priority for enforcement. Vehicles parked in a way that restricts access of emergency vehicles will be towed.

Keeping Sidewalks Clear
Property owners/occupants are reminded that they have six hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining wheelchair ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. The City is responsible for clearing sidewalks around City-owned properties.

The City performs proactive inspections and also relies on citizen complaints to help identify those property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. The vast majority of property owners comply with these regulations, but the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

Potholes
The freeze/thaw cycle and frequent plowing results in cracks and potholes in streets. Where possible, crews have been using cold patches to temporarily repair the worst potholes. More permanent repairs using hot asphalt require warmer weather in the spring in order for proper bonding to occur. The City will also resume its resurfacing program in the spring. Residents can report potholes through www.hoboken311.com and crews will address the worst locations with cold patch until permanent repairs can be made in the spring.

Reporting Problems
To report an unplowed street, unshoveled sidewalk, or other problem, residents can submit an online complaint via www.hoboken311.com. During normal business hours, they can also call the Department of Environmental Services at 201-420-2385.
