Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

Notable Cases

On Monday, 02-03-14 at 4:35 p.m., Officer Lilian Tashiro and Officer Cameron Newton stopped a vehicle for a brake light violation. Officer Tashiro smelled an odor of marijuana as she stepped up to the vehicle. After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, Officer Tashiro found marijuana in the center console, an 8” blade kitchen knife, a full-face ski mask with the eyes and mouth cut out, and a semi-automatic hand gun. The gun was reported stolen from San Francisco. The driver, a 51-year old Daly City resident, said he carried both the knife and gun for protection. He was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle while on public streets, possession of stolen property and driving with a suspended driver's license.

On Monday, 02-03-14 at 11:43 p.m., Officer Gary Thompson was dispatched to the bus stop at Serramonte Shopping Center on the report of a male wearing a camouflage sweater who told a security officer he had a gun and was going to use it on him. Two officers were already on the scene approaching the subject, telling him to raise his hands. The subject, who was 5’11” and approximately 350 pounds, refused to comply. A struggle ensued as the subject resisted arrest, and Officer Ben Wagnon suffered a contusion to his shoulder. The subject did not have a gun but had prescription pills not belonging to him in his possession. The subject, a 31-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, criminal threats and resisting arrest.

On Tuesday, 02-04-14 at approximately 1:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of Peoria Street on a report of a vehicle fire. Several witnesses said a white Mercedes sedan was seen leaving the area soon after the vehicle was observed on fire. The investigation is continued.

On Sunday, 02-09-14 at 3:35 a.m., Officer Lee Aquila and Officer Ben Wagnon were dispatched to the parking garage at 2051 Junipero Serra Boulevard on a report of a suspicious male walking in the garage. The subject, a 54-year old San Francisco resident, was in possession. methamphetamine, a forged check and two bank debit cards not belonging to him. He was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and for forgery.


Robberies

There was one robbery during the past week.

On Thursday, 02-06-14 at 1:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Skyline Drive on a report of an interrupted residential burglary. The 41-year old victim said a black female knocked on her door and asked for directions to the bus stop. The victim then closed the door and started doing her laundry. She said at that time, she saw two black males in her home who simulated a handgun. The victim was punched in the mouth and head, held to the ground and dragged by her hair through the residence. She was then forced into a bedroom for 30 minutes while the suspects ransacked the house. The suspects entered the residence via breaking a sliding glass door window to the back of the residence. The loss was a laptop, purses, credit cards and currency. The victim suffered a laceration to her upper lip, pain to her head and contusions to her left arm.


Residential Burglaries

There was one attempted residential burglary during the past week.

On Monday, 02-03-14 between 4:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., a residence on the 300 block of Morton Drive was the victim of an attempted burglary. The rear door knob was pried, but no entry was made.



Commercial Burglaries

There were no commercial burglaries during the past week.


Vehicle Burglaries

There were ten vehicle burglaries during the past week. Please do not keep valuables in your vehicle—even in your trunk. Thieves are now not just taking items in plain view—they are opening the trunk once they gain entry into the vehicle.

• Koi Palace parking lot—two backpacks containing two laptops, two cameras, two iPads, a cell phone and currency from a 2014 Chrysler minivan. The driver’s side window was smashed. Occurred on 02-05-14 between 6:50 p.m. and 9:40 p.m.
• Val’s Restaurant parking lot—nothing taken from a 2007 Toyota Prius. The back hatch and rear passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
• Pacific Restaurant parking lot—nothing taken from a 2012 Dodge Journey. The rear passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 4:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.
• Dr. Young Again parking lot—a purse containing identification and cash was taken from a 2013 Toyota Minivan. The side window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
• Dr. Young Again parking lot—nothing taken from a 2007 Toyota Corolla. The rear driver’s side window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
• Target parking lot—an iPad and a laptop was taken from the front passenger of a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. The front passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 2:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
• Target parking lot—a MacBook Pro and purse containing cosmetics was taken from a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder. The right rear passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 at 2:26 p.m.
• Target parking lot—nothing taken from a 2013 Ford Focus. The rear window was smashed. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 2:20 p.m. and 3:10 p.m.
• 100 block of Morningside Drive—a plumbing snake machine and miscellaneous tools was taken from a 2000 Chevrolet van. The method of entry was unknown. Occurred on 02-08-14 between 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
• 200 block of Cerro Drive—registration and insurance information was taken from a 2005 Toyota RAV4. An unknown window was smashed. Occurred on 02-09-14 between 7:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.


Stolen Vehicles

There were five stolen vehicles during the past week. Two were recovered.

• 200 block of Warwick Street—2005 Ford E150. Occurred between 6:45 p.m. on 02-03-14 and 8:45 p.m. on 02-04-14.
• Bayshore Child Care Center parking lot—a 1991 Honda Accord. Occurred between 6:00 p.m. on 02-06-14 and 6:45 a.m. on 02-07-14. **Recovered by San Francisco P.D. on 02-08-14.
• 300 block of Whittier Street—a 1996 Honda Accord. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 12:01 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
• Bellevue Avenue/Lowell Street—a 1999 Honda Civic. Occurred on 02-07-14 between 12:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. **Recovered later that day by Daly City P.D.
• Unit block of Kent Court—a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder. Occurred between 7:00 p.m. on 02-08-14 and 7:00 a.m. on 02-09-14.

Household Waste Collection

Residents looking for a safe an environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste are encouraged to make an appointment for a special collection in Daly City on Saturday March 8, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the main parking lot at City Hall, 333-90th Street, near the intersection of Sullivan Avenue. Appointments are available in 15-minute increments throughout the morning and may be made online at http://events.smhealth.org/events

The City of Daly City launched “iHelp”, an innovative citizen’s service request and civic engagement tool allowing residents to easily interact and stay connected with their local government. Daly City iHelp is a free mobile device application (“app”) and is available from the Apple and Google app stores for immediate download. By utilizing this service, residents can access important City information, report issues (graffiti, garbage complaints, etc.), and track requests online and via mobile devices. Please take a moment to download the app or go to the city of Daly City website to see what requests have been already made on iHelp. For requests to the Police Department, please note the app is not maintained 24 hours per day, and service requests must be of a non-urgent matter.
