Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 01-29-14 at 4:06 p.m., following a traffic stop for a vehicle registration violation on the 600 block of Schwerin Street, Officer Taylor Johnson arrested the driver, a 24-year old Daly City resident, for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with obliterated serial numbers.

On Friday, 01-31-14 at 9:38 a.m., Officer Janet Cordellos was dispatched to the Alpine Inn on Carter Street on a report of a loud intoxicated female. The hotel manager reported the woman got into a red BMW, hit a vehicle and then sped out of the parking lot. Officer Cordellos saw the vehicle on Geneva Avenue and attempted to stop it. A short pursuit ensued, and the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a fire hydrant. The driver, a 49-year old Millbrae resident, was arrested for driving under the influence, felony evading of a police officer, hit and run resulting in city and private property damage, and resisting/delaying a police officer.

Robberies

There was one robbery and one attempted robbery during the past week; however, I inadvertently mentioned them in last week’s bulletin. (They both occurred on 01-27-14)

Residential Burglaries

There were two residential burglaries during the past week.

On Tuesday, 01-28-14 between 7:40 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., a residence on the unit block of Wilshire Avenue was burglarized. An unknown suspect entered the residence via forcing open the front door. The loss was jewelry and cash.

On Thursday, 01-30-14 between 8:10 a.m. and 12:06 p.m., a residence on the unit block of Menlo Avenue was burglarized. An unknown subject smashed the rear backyard window to gain entry. The loss was miscellaneous jewelry, electronics and two firearms.

Commercial Burglaries

There were no commercial burglaries during the past week.

Vehicle Burglaries

There were three vehicle burglaries during the past week. Please do not keep valuables in your vehicle—even in your trunk. Thieves are now not just taking items in plain view—they are opening the trunk once they gain entry into the vehicle.

• 2600 block of Geneva Avenue—nothing taken from a 2001 Nissan Xterra. The rear passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 01-27-14 between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
• 100 block of Oakridge Drive—nothing taken from a 1996 Acura Integra. The method of entry is unknown. Occurred on 01-31-14 between 8:40 p.m. and midnight.
• 200 block of Los Olivos Avenue—a backpack containing three credit cards and miscellaneous items was taken from a 2011 Nissan. Occurred between 10:00 p.m. on 01-31-14 and 8:00 a.m. on 02-01-14.

Stolen Vehicles

There was one stolen vehicle during the past week.

• Shelbourne Avenue/Southgate Avenue—a 1995 Honda Accord. Occurred between 8:00 p.m. on 01-28-14 and 2:00 p.m. on 01-29-14.

New Bayshore Shuttle Service

A free mid-week shuttle will begin service in the Bayshore Neighborhood on Monday, January 6, 2014. The shuttle is entirely grant-funded and managed by the San Mateo County Transit District. A group of stakeholders from the Bayshore Neighborhood identified the need for a circulator shuttle when they collaborated with staff from Daly City, Sam Trans, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to develop a Community-based Transportation Plan.

The shuttle provides Bayshore residents mobility opportunities in an area with few other public transit options. Service will start at 6:30 a.m. weekdays and continue through the morning commute, with the last shuttle departing the Bayshore Community Center at 10:38 a.m. Service resumes in the afternoon with the first departure from the 7 Mile House on Bayshore Boulevard at 4:00 p.m. A complete route map and timetable is available online at www.dalycity.org/bayshoreshuttle.

Shuttle destinations include the North Peninsula Food Pantry and Dining Center of Daly City (Top of the Hill), Civic Center (City Hall, DMV, Peninsula Works, the Daly City Community Service Center, and Mike Nevin Health Center), Serramonte Center, Seton Medical Center, Safeway, and Walgreens. The shuttle also provides connections to Sam Trans and Muni service (regular fare is required for connecting service). Additionally, the shuttle has scheduled stops at the Daly City and Balboa Park BART stations.

The shuttle is wheelchair accessible. For more information about the new Bayshore Shuttle, call Sam Trans customer service at (800) 660-4287 or visit www.samtrans.com/DCB.

iHelp

The City of Daly City launched “iHelp”, an innovative citizen’s service request and civic engagement tool allowing residents to easily interact and stay connected with their local government. Daly City iHelp is a free mobile device application (“app”) and is available from the Apple and Google app stores for immediate download. By utilizing this service, residents can access important City information, report issues (graffiti, garbage complaints, etc.), and track requests online and via mobile devices. Please take a moment to download the app or go to the city of Daly City website to see what requests have been already made on iHelp. For requests to the Police Department, please note the app is not maintained 24 hours per day, and service requests must be of a non-urgent matter.
