Notable Cases

Due to the holiday, this bulletin contains two weeks of information.

On Monday, 01-20-14 at 4:50 p.m., BART P.D. reported a strong arm robbery in the area of the Daly City BART station. The suspect information given was that there were approximately 12 black male juveniles between the ages of 8-12 years. Sgt. Matt Fox was responding to the scene and observed four juveniles in the area matching the description of the suspects. Two of the four suspects fled the scene but were apprehended shortly thereafter. All four suspects were transported to the Daly City Police Department and held for the BART police department to take over the investigation.

On Tuesday, 01-21-14 at 4:52 p.m., Officer Benjamin Wagnon and Officer Sean Begley were dispatched to a physical fight in progress in the area of Woodrow Street and Westlake Avenue. Dispatch advised that a male subject was seen grabbing a female subject, and that she was being dragged by a moving vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle, and it contained two male subjects. One subject said they were having a verbal argument. While Officer Begley contacted the other subject, he saw a silver metal box in the subject’s interior coat pocket, and next to that he saw a plastic baggie containing a white rock crystal substance. The subject, a 36-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for possession a controlled substance for sale and for displaying a false registration tab on his vehicle.

On Tuesday, 01-21-14 at 8:56 p.m., Officers Benjamin Wagnon and Sean Begley were dispatched to the Greek Imports business on Mission Street on a report of a burglary in progress. An alert citizen reported that a subject had just thrown a rock through the front door of the business and entered through the broken doorway. The officers were then advised that the subject was last seen walking on foot. The officers stopped the subject, a 47-year old San Francisco resident, and he was in possession of counterfeit money and suspected cocaine base. He was arrested for burglary and the other two charges.

On Monday, 01-27-14 at approximately 7:50 p.m., Officer Kenneth Kim was dispatched to the 7/11 store on Gellert Boulevard on a report of two males involved in a physical fight in which pepper spray was deployed and weapons—a bat and knife—were being used by the subjects. The victim said he was inside the store paying for something when a black male subject saw the victim’s money and demanded some of it. Words were exchanged, the victim didn’t comply, and the suspect left the store. The suspect returned shortly after with a baseball bat and struck the victim in the wrist with it. The victim pulled out a small pocket knife and pepper spray. He didn’t use the knife; however, he sprayed the suspect’s face. The suspect fled the store in a white Ford van. Officers were able to stop the van in Burlingame, and the suspect, a 51-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Scams/Other

There are three notable “scams” that occurred within the past two weeks.

On 01-11-14, a 40-year old Daly City resident applied for a loan on the internet site (“www.clickandloan.com”). The victim said he provided his name, address, phone number, social security number and checking account number on the application. He said two days later, he received a phone call from a male “Jack” who said he was with “US Cash Loan Services”, and that he had been approved for a personal loan for $1,500 but in order for the loan to go through, he had to make an insurance payment of $150 as part of the loan process. “Jack” told the victim to purchase a Green Dot Money Pack from any store to make the payment. The victim complied and followed “Jack’s” instructions to make payment. “Jack” called back and said the victim qualified for a $5,000 loan, but in order for that to go through, he would need a Green Dot Money Park for $500 as an insurance payment. Once again, the victim complied. “Jack” then called back and said the victim needed to pay $300 more, but the victim didn’t have enough money. The next day, the victim said he tried to call “Jack” several times, but it went straight to a voicemail. At this point, the victim realized he was scammed.

According to “Green Dot Money Pak”, they advised never to give a Money Pak number to someone not listed on www.moneypak.com.

On Saturday, 01-17-14 at 2:00 p.m., a business on Geneva Avenue was the victims of criminal threats and attempted theft via false pretenses. The reporting party said one of her employees received a phone call from a subject claiming to be a PG&E employee. The subject said that the electric bill payment had not been completed that month, and they would be shutting off the electricity to the business if the owners didn’t purchase a gift card for payment. The owner of the business called the owner back with the number that was provided, and the subject reiterated that the payment was late and that she needed to go to Walgreen’s or CVS to purchase a gift card. The owner of the business called PG&E, and they advised her that her bill was not outstanding, and the person calling was a scam artist and to not buy the gift card. The subject later called the victim back, and she advised that she was not going to buy the gift card, and that she was going to report him to the police. The subject became upset with her and threatened to shut off her power, blow up the restaurant and hurt her family.

On Saturday, 01-25-14 at 8:15 a.m., 65-year old and 71-year old Daly City residents, were the victims of extortion from a subject on the telephone, claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service. The resident said the phone rang early, and she let it go to the answering machine. The message said the person was with the Investigative Bureau of the Internal Revenue Service and that he needed to contact the I.R.S. or the Daly City Police Department would come and arrest him. The female resident called the number on the message, and the subject asked for $4,000 or her husband would be arrested by the I.R.S. and/or the Daly City Police Department. The victim said she was upset and enraged at the caller, and they got into a dispute which led the “I.R.S. Agent” to hang up on her. No money was lost in this. I just caution you that this is also a scam.

New Bayshore Shuttle Service

A free mid-week shuttle will begin service in the Bayshore Neighborhood on Monday, January 6, 2014. The shuttle is entirely grant-funded and managed by the San Mateo County Transit District. The shuttle provides Bayshore residents mobility opportunities in an area with few other public transit options. Service will start at 6:30 a.m. weekdays and continue through the morning commute, with the last shuttle departing the Bayshore Community Center at 10:38 a.m. Service resumes in the afternoon with the first departure from the 7 Mile House on Bayshore Boulevard at 4:00 p.m. A complete route map and timetable is available online at www.dalycity.org/bayshoreshuttle.

Shuttle destinations include the North Peninsula Food Pantry and Dining Center of Daly City (Top of the Hill), Civic Center (City Hall, DMV, Peninsula Works, the Daly City Community Service Center, and Mike Nevin Health Center), Serramonte Center, Seton Medical Center, Safeway, and Walgreens.
