Anchorage police discovered an unresponsive male inside of a South Anchorage residence after a 10-hour standoff with police.

APD Public Information Release on Sunday, January 26, 2014:

Anchorage police discovered an unresponsive male inside of a South Anchorage residence after a 10-hour standoff with police.

Police responded to the residence on the 9000 block of William Jones Circle at 5:30 a.m. after a report was made that a male subject had threatened to kill a female inside the residence. It was reported to police that the male was armed. The female was able to leave the residence and went to a neighbor's for help. Police attempted to make contact with the barricaded male to get him to safely come out of the residence, but he did not. SWAT was called out to the scene just before 10 a.m. to assist police with apprehending the male suspect. A variety of less lethal tools were used during police response including a PA system, noise frequencies and gas, none of which resulted in the male peacefully surrendering to police. Just after 3:00 p.m. police were able to make entry into the residence. An unresponsive male was located inside. The male was declared deceased at the scene in what appeared to be a self-inflicted death. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. Police do believe alcohol was a factor in this incident. The male's identity will not be released until positive identification and next of kin notifications have been made.
