The APD Report Taking Unit is receiving several reports of a recent utility scam targeting businesses, in which a caller claiming to represent Municipal Light & Power (ML&P) contacts the business stating its utility bill is overdue. The scammer then threatens service disruption if the account is not immediately made current, insisting that payment be made telephonically via pre-paid cash card.

Fortunately, none of the targeted businesses have fallen for the scam, but this scenario serves as a good reminder to be on the look-out for cons such as this. NEVER provide personal information or payments over the phone to anyone unknown to you without first ensuring the business and caller are legitimate.

REMEMBER: If an unknown caller is asking for personal information and/or encouraging you to send untraceable funds to an unfamiliar address, chances are good it is a scam!

ML&P advises its customers that at no time will an ML&P employee threaten a customer with disconnection if immediate payment isn’t made, and encourages customers to be aware of utility scams by always verifying their account information with an ML&P Customer Service Representative. Further, ML&P has provided a fact sheet designed to help protect customers from falling victim to scams such as this.
