City begins preliminary 63rd and Prospect cleanup Jan. 22

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will conduct a preliminary cleanup for the 63rd & Prospect Redevelopment Project beginning today, Wednesday, Jan. 22, and continuing for the following two to three weeks.

The preliminary cleanup will be a “test pit” activity, excavating four to six lots of the 68 identified as suspect for buried asbestos debris.  Any found asbestos will be properly disposed of and the sites backfilled.  Measures will be taken to suppress dust and monitor air quality.  The activity will yield important information regarding whether buried asbestos material is actually present in these former residential lots, and if so, how much is present, how it is distributed with other debris and soil, and how it is most safely and efficiently removed and disposed of.  The City will use these findings to to reduce the cost and improve the effectiveness of its current plan for the full-site cleanup, which will go to bid in the near future. This full cleanup will be funded by the City and funds from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund Grant.

The site’s cleanup is intended to reduce potential risks to human health and the environment and help prepare the site for future redevelopment, as guided by a community-driven planning process. The 63rd & Prospect Redevelopment Project focuses on the area within these general boundaries: 60th Street south to 63rd Street; and Park Avenue east to Prospect Avenue.
