Deputies’ arrest armed commercial burglary suspect after brief pursuit and altercation.

On January 16, 2014 at approximately 10:00 PM, deputies from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and Windsor Police Department responded to a reported “in-progress” commercial burglary occurring at a closed business in the 100 block of Lystra Court in Larkfield. A security company monitoring the closed business contact the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center and reported monitoring a “video alarm” and observing a person on camera inside the closed business.

Deputies arriving on scene observed a cargo truck leaving the immediate area of the closed business. Deputies attempted to stop the cargo truck, but the cargo truck fled the scene and a short pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended after the cargo truck struck a stop sign in the vicinity of Airport Boulevard and Faught Road. Deputies observed the suspect driver of the truck fleeing the scene on foot after the collision with the stop sign.

After establishing a perimeter in the area, deputies located the suspect hiding in a neighboring apartment complex. The suspect ignored deputies’ repeated verbal requests to submit to arrest and while attempting to take the suspect into custody, the suspect became combative and he resisted the deputies’ attempts to arrest him. After a brief altercation with the suspect, deputies were able to overcome the suspect’s combative behavior and he was taken into custody. During this altercation, deputies observed the suspect attempting to reach and retrieve an unknown object from the front waist band of his pants. During a search incident to arrest, deputies located a loaded handgun in the suspect’s possession. The suspect and two deputies involved in the altercation received injuries during this incident. The deputies and the suspect went to local hospitals for follow-up medical treatment and were released.

The suspect was identified as Ryan Lester Hughes, 37 years old from Windsor. At the time of his arrest, Hughes had an outstanding $300,000 felony arrest warrant. Hughes was subsequently transported and booked in the Sonoma County Jail for Battery on a Peace Officer, Obstructing/Resisting a Peace Officer, Ex-Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm in Public, Concealing a Loaded Firearm, Felony Evading, Burglary, Vehicle Theft, and Possession of Burglary Tools. Hughes’ bail was set at $330,000
