Each week we post scams that were reported to NSPD. The goal of this program is to educate the public on recent scams we have investigated.
Highlighted Scams:
Target Scammers: As a result of the highly publicized Target data breach, scammers may attempt to send phony “Target” emails pretending to help. The scammers will attempt to gather personal information through emails that may look very real and include the Target logo.
Free Gift Emails: Scammers often send emails offering free gifts which require you to provide your personal information. Common gifts offered include free gift cards, a new computer tablet, or vacation trips.
Even though these emails are very tempting, delete the message and do not provide your personal information.
TIPS TO PREVENT BECOMING A VICTIM:
If an email asks for your personal or financial information, it’s most likely a scam. No legitimate business will ask for your personal information through unsecure methods.
If there are links in a suspicious email, do not click on them, even if they seem legit at first glance. These links can often install viruses to your computer or direct you to sites which will steal your information.
Frequently check your accounts to look for any unauthorized purchases.
Check your credit report at least once a year. You can use Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to provide a free copy of your credit report every 12 months.
If you think you have received a fake email, forward it to [email protected], and delete the message from your inbox.
