Advisory

Sheriff's office removes "good time" to keep criminals off the streets longer. Click for more info. Sheriff Hill

Effective immediately, the Clayton County Sheriff's office will no longer allow inmates sentenced to the Clayton County jail automatic "good time" in order to get out of jail early unless it is earned by worker detail participation, or rare discretional circumstances. The "good time" law (O.C.G.A 42-4-7) was created to give Georgia Sheriffs the discretion to release inmates early by giving up to 4 days credit for every day served as a way to relieve overcrowding in county jails. By consistently using this law when there is no overcrowding at the Clayton County jail, previous administrations have released criminals to our streets early which places the public in Clayton County at unnecessary risk. To curtail this, the Clayton County Sheriff's office is removing "good time" to keep criminals off the street longer. This will also discourage criminals from ever wanting to come back to the Clayton County jail by ensuring they will serve each day they are sentenced.
