Winter Storm Warning – January 2, 2014

Categories: News, OEM

Message from Lt. Jim Bennet of the Brigantine Office of Emergency Management

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for every NJ county, except for Cape May County, where a Winter Storm Advisory has been issued.

The full forecast can be found here: www.weather.gov/phi and for NE NJ counties: www.weather.gov/nyc. We expect an emergency management briefing from NWS later today and will share info we receive. We remain in close contact with NJ State Agencies, the NWS, and our County Emergency Management partners.

We will start to feel the impacts of the storm during the late afternoon and evening commute, from North to South. Overnight conditions will be quite dangerous due to wind chills, high winds, falling show and blowing show. The lowest wind chills in 5 years will be experienced Friday into Saturday.

We ask you to continue to take the following actions:

1. Please share this information widely, also communicate this information to those who are not engaged with social media.

2. Check on elderly or disabled relatives and friends, or those who are isolated, during this time period.

3. Continue to monitor NWS forecasts.

4. Engage with County OEM Social Media and other alert systems where you live and work. Links here: http://www.ready.nj.gov/about/association.html

Highlights from this morning’s NWS Mt. Holly forecast discussion:

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/…
PRECIPITATION WILL BE FALLING IN EARNEST DURING THIS TIME FRAME, WITH ALL SNOW NORTH, AND STARTING OUT AS RAIN OR RAIN-SNOW MIX IN THE SOUTH, CHANGING TO ALL SNOW EVERYWHERE AS COLDER AIR INVADES THE REGION DURING THE EVENING HOURS. THE SNOW COULD FALL AT A RATE OF ONE INCH PER HOUR AT TIMES…ESPECIALLY NORTH AND WEST OF PHILADELPHIA. AS TWO LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS COMBINE INTO ONE OFF THE DELAWARE AND NEW JERSEY COASTS, THE COMBINED SYSTEM WILL QUICKLY INTENSIFY. WHICH WILL CAUSE WIND SPEEDS TO DRAMATICALLY INCREASE DURING THE LATE EVENING HOURS.
THERE IS A CHC WE MAY EVENTUALLY NEED TO CONSIDER A BLIZZARD WARNING FOR MONMOUTH AND OCEAN COUNTIES TONIGHT IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.
WHERE ITS WELL ABOVE FREEZING TODAY…SOUTHERN NJ AND THE DELMARVA… THE COMBINATION OF SNOW AND RAPIDLY FALLING TEMPS IS GOING TO DEVELOP TREACHEROUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS BETWEEN 7PM AND MIDNIGHT.
FLUFFY DRY SNOW LATE AT NIGHT WILL BE BLOWING AND DRIFTING.
