Update to Homicide Investigation in Santa Rosa (13-16163)

Original Media Release – 12-31-13:

On 12-31-13 at approximately 2:00 a.m. The Santa Rosa Police Department received a call of shots fired from an apartment complex at 2001 Piner Rd. Upon arrival, police found a 20 year old male Santa Rosa resident lying on the ground near the parking area with bullet wounds to the torso and arm. The male was treated at the scene by medical personnel and brought to Memorial Hospital but he did not survive his injuries.

Police established a crime scene in the area where the male was found. They searched the area for suspects but none were identified. Detectives were called to the scene and the investigation into the death of the man is on-going. According to witnesses in the area, the shots followed some sort of disturbance or dispute. The victim’s name is being withheld at this time due to the continuing investigation and pending family notification. He is not a resident at the complex.


On 12-31-13 a 15 year old male juvenile was arrested and booked for Murder in this case. The investigation revealed that the juvenile produced a firearm during a dispute and shot the victim with it. The victim was identified as Damien Wadell Toney Jr., a 20 year old Santa Rosa resident. The dispute apparently began inside a party at a nearby apartment and continued outside. After the shooting, the suspect fled and hid in the residence of an acquaintance nearby. A firearm, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting was recovered during the investigation.

The name of the suspect will not be released because he is a juvenile.
