Advisory

Grosse Pointe Farms has declared a Snow Emergency effective Saturday, 12/14/13 from 2:00 pm until Sunday, 12/15/13 till 8:00 am

The City of Grosse Pointe Farms has declared a Snow Emergency effective Saturday, December 14th, 2013 starting at 2:00 pm until Sunday, December 15th, 2013 till 8:00 am, this is being issued under city ordinance 169, section 1.

During this snow emergency, no on-street parking will be allowed except in cases in which there is no driveway provided to a specific private property. All violators are subject to ticketing and/or towing of their vehicles. The Public Safety Department will be clearing as many fire hydrants as possible. However this is a huge time consuming operation. If a resident feels inclined to shovel out a hydrant in front of their property it would be greatly appreciated.

Depositing snow in the street:

Pursuant to MCL 257.677a(4), it is a 90-day/$100 misdemeanor to “deposit, or cause to be deposited, snow, ice or slush on any roadway or highway.” By definition, a highway or street is “the entire width between the boundaries lines of every way publicly maintained when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel” and includes the roadway, shoulders, ditch slopes, and sidewalks.

Questions regarding this matter should be directed to the Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety's non-emergency line at (313)-885-2100.

USEFUL WINTER TIPS:
Residents can help make the streets and sidewalks safer by following
a few rules:

• Do not plow snow onto the street or sidewalk. Snow thrown back into the street for “the traffic to melt,” only creates a snow pack that turns into ice, creating a hazardous condition. If you have a snow removal contractor, please advise them of this request.
• Do not allow children to play on the snow piles near the street. It may be fun, but it puts them in extreme danger from passing vehicles.
• When a snow event occurs, please move vehicles out of the street. Snow plows have to maneuver around parked cars and snow gets moved in places that can create additional inconveniences for you and your neighbors.
